PublicCloudSIG

Status: Active

Chairs:

 * Tobias Rydberg <tobias.rydberg@cleura.com>
 * Felix Kronlage-Dammers <fkr@osb-alliance.com>

The aim of this group is to represent the interests of the OpenStack public cloud provider community, and to further adoption of OpenStack public cloud usage.

Purpose

  • Internal: we represent the voice of OS-based public cloud providers towards the rest of OS community
  • External: we represent the OS-based cloud providers towards the market (what are our value strengths), the press (what we think), the customers (what we sell), the other non-OS providers (regulation, fair competition etc) especially valid for EU based ones

Scope

Advocacy for OpenStack Public Clouds and ease of use for users and operators

  • We advocate for OpenStack Public Clouds with focus on ease of use for users and operators
  • Working on a draft for a easier discoverability of cloud functionality for end users

Keep "Missing features list" up to date with references to specs, status, commits etc

  • The (legacy) spreadsheet of missing features is now tracked in launchpad: https://bugs.launchpad.net/openstack-publiccloud-wg
  • Convert items in list to specs when needed
  • Keep the spreadsheet for new items and as reference
  • Set the structure for how to work with the list and the specs

Definition

The NIST definition of a Public Cloud as a deployment model is:

"The cloud infrastructure is provisioned for open use by the general public. It may be owned, managed, and operated by a business, academic, or government organisation, or some combination of them. It exists on the premises of the cloud provider."

This is further expanded within the context of this p by the following:

  • Multi-tenant;
  • Offers publicly accessible native OpenStack APIs.

Members

No formal membership is required. Please introduce yourself and/or fellow colleagues to this SIG using one of the mailing lists below, or by attending one of the IRC or video meetings.

This group is open to all members of the OpenStack public cloud provider community and supporting vendors.

Getting Involved

The current scope and focus of the SIG is defined above. Generally we're looking for people to contribute wherever able and in whatever way they see fit. Feedback is always appreciated!

See below for how to communicate and get involved with the Public Cloud SIG. Aside from the regularly scheduled IRC and video meetings, a few members also hang out in #openstack-operators on OFTC (irc).

Communication

The default communication of our members is via the following open community mailing lists:

  • openstack-discuss@lists.openstack.org for operational discussion of public cloud related OpenStack deployment issues. Please prefix email subject lines with the tag "[publiccloud]".

Please use the hashtag "publiccloud-sig" for tagging any etherpad URLs, code, blog posts and/or other social publishing platforms.

Meetings

In the course of 2023 we started to transition to video calls instead of just having IRC meetings. The invitation that is sent to openstack-discuss prior to the meeting will indicate where we meet. At the time of the meeting there will always be a message on the IRC channel as well with a pointer towards the video conference room being used. We have one meeting every other week:

Bi-weekly on odd weeks on Wednesdays at 0700 UTC during summer time, 0800 UTC during winter time.

The currently selected time is most suitable for participants from western Europe - this is due to the fact that most active people are in this timezone. If you want to join but can't due to this being unsuitable, please contact the chairs of the SIG and we'll figure out. If more people from other timezones want to join, we're sure we can accommodate to that fact.

Video Meetings

We meet in this room on meetpad: https://meetpad.opendev.org/publiccloud-sig

Having your camera turned on is welcome.

IRC Meetings

For the time being we’ve switch completely to video meetings.
