Talk 1 - Designate: An Overview of Openstack DNSaaS

Abstract

Designate, a recently incubated Project, intends to solve the DNS needs of OpenStack by providing a RESTful API for managing DNS data with a variety of databases on many different backends. Additionally, Designate will also provide a service for integrating with Nova and Neutron. This talk will cover:

  • Why Openstack and operators need DNSaaS.
  • The Designate Architecture.
  • The Designate API.
  • New Features Since the Last Summit, including MiniDNS, Server Pools, the Version 2 API.
  • The Next Steps For Designate, including the Version 2 API, additions to Server Pools, and MinDNS.

Come see who is involved, and how easy it is to get involved in this exciting project.

This talk is a general overview. It will cover the problem statement, architecture and general features.

Talk 2 - On Server Pools

Abstract

A deep dive into the advantages that server pools will have for operators.

Designate server pools are a new feature under active development in Juno and Kilo. It allows domains to be slip across multiple pools of DNS servers, each with their own namespace and features.

Server pools will also allow operators to use multiple DNS Server software in one Designate install, even within a pool.

Dynamic addition of servers, allowing for tiered pricing on DNS features, and distribution of DNS query load are major advantages for DNSaaS operators.

With server pools, Designate addresses these issues, and in this session we will show an operator how they can used to the best effect.

We will also have an extended discussion section, to allow operators to provide feedback, and gain additional insight into Designate's plans in this area.

Workshop - How to write a driver for your DNS server

Abstract

We will show how easy it it to support a new DNS server in Designate by running through, step by step, the creation of a new driver for a currently unsupported DNS server.

We will use MiniDNS, and a basic set of backend instructions (zone, recordset and record CRUD)

Workshop - Install and Operate Designate (repeat of Atlanta workshop)

Abstract

Designate provides DNSaaS services for OpenStack.

This interactive workshop will guide attendees on how Designate can be installed with PowerDNS. For the purposes of the workshop the various designate components will be installed on a single node. Once installed it shows some of the V1 and V2 APIs for domain and record management. The workshop will conclude by using a tool like dig to retrieve the added records from the PowerDNS backend, showing a fully functional by-hand deployment.

The workshop will also cover the steps for contributing to the development of Designate.

Several of the Designate contributors will be on hand during the workshop to help attendees work through the deployment.

Notes/Questions

- Is there any appetite/need to repeat any of the presentations we gave in Atlanta, just with updated information? (I added the second workshop incase we think that is a good idea. - Ron Rickard)
