[[File:GSoC2016Logo.jpg]]

[http://www.openstack.org/software/ OpenStack] is applying as a mentoring organization for the Google Summer of Code 2016 internships. Check [https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/ Google Developers site] for more information on how the program works.

Link to FAQs: [https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/faq here]

== What is OpenStack ==

[http://www.openstack.org/software/ OpenStack] is an open-source IaaS cloud computing platform. Its mission is to provide a flexible solution for both public and private clouds of any size, and for this matter two basic requirements are considered: clouds must be simple to implement and massively scalable.

To meet these principles OpenStack is divided into different components that work together. It's [http://www.openstack.org/software/openstack-compute/ computing], [http://www.openstack.org/software/openstack-storage/ storage], [http://www.openstack.org/software/openstack-networking/ networking], and all the other bits that help make this project, '''The Cloud'''.

OpenStack is [http://i.imgur.com/gAyoiF8.png continuously growing] and new and exciting projects are being discussed everyday.

We encourage new contributors to participate and help us make OpenStack the most complete, reliable and flexible open-source cloud service!

== Mentors ==

If you're interested in mentoring for this round, please add your name, email, IRC handle and the kind of projects you're interested in mentoring below. Please ensure that the projects are official projects in OpenStack and are registered in the [https://github.com/openstack/governance/blob/master/reference/projects.yaml governance projects.yaml].

* Victoria Martinez de la Cruz - victoria AT redhat.com - vkmc - Zaqar (Messaging and Notifications), Trove (Databases)
* Davanum Srinivas - davanum AT gmail.com - dims - Oslo (Common Libraries), Nova (Compute)
* Kirill Zaitsev k.zaitsev AT me.com - kzaitsev_* - Murano (Application Catalog)
* Nikhil Komawar nik.komawar AT gmail.com - nikhil - Glance (Openstack Images), Searchlight
* Joshua Hesketh josh AT nitrotech.org - Infrastructure

== Students ==

Students application period opens '''March 14'' and ends on '''March 25'''.

If you'd like to get started on your proposal early, go ahead and add your name, location, e-mail, IRC handle and the project you are interested in (if you already know about that!) here:

*
-
- <irc handle> - <project>

== Communication ==

Get in touch with mentors and students through the [http://lists.openstack.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/openstack-dev openstack-dev mailing list].

Also, you can find us at IRC in #openstack-gsoc at irc.freenode.org.

Then, let's start to write your proposal! A proposal template can be seen at [[GSoC2015/StudentApplicationTemplate|GSoC2015/StudentApplicationTemplate]].

== Ideas ==

Suggestions for students to choose from for their applications are maintained on the [[Internship_ideas|page of ideas for an internship]]. This doesn't mean students have to stick strictly to this list; don't hesitate in propose projects by your own. For the latter, it would be great if you could submit a draft proposal and a estimated timeline.

When writing your proposal, try to estimate your timeline to fit the 4 month period of GSoC coding. Also, take into account that '''GSoC does not consider other projects than coding''', so other ideas (like community tasks or i18n efforts) are not suitable for this internship.

See this mailing list post for [http://lists.openstack.org/pipermail/openstack-dev/2015-August/071816.html full background]. These changes are scheduled to occur on October 17, 2015.

There are two lists below, one for active projects that should be moved, and a second for inactive projects that should become read-only. Please update them to add your project to the correct list.

=== Active Projects to Move ===
Active stackforge projects that wish to move into the openstack/ namespace should be added to this list. Projects in this list will be automatically moved by the Infrastructure team to openstack/ on October 17. Please note that no other renames can happen during this move -- projects will strictly be moved from stackforge/ to openstack/ with their existing names.
= Weekly Project Infrastructure team meeting =

The OpenStack Project Infrastructure Team holds public weekly meetings in
<nowiki>#openstack-meeting</nowiki>
, Tuesdays at 1900 UTC. Everyone interested in infrastructure and process surrounding automated testing and deployment is encouraged to attend.

Please feel free to add agenda items (and your IRC nick in parenthesis).

** Nodepool DIB
** Migration to Zanata
*** Aim to launch in production the week of September 7th to be in time to handle translations for Liberty, there's a little bit of outstanding work to get there
** Downstream Puppet
** Maniphest
*** Current status/blockers
** Docs publishing
*** Holding pattern while Swift logs issues get ironed out
* Open discussion
** Ansible roles under -infra (pabelanger)
*** http://lists.openstack.org/pipermail/openstack-dev/2015-September/073857.html

** Nodepool consuming requirements (ianw 15-Sep-2015)
*** pabelanger identified in https://review.openstack.org/#/c/223280/
*** nodepool will break with pip dependency issues when dib next releases
*** Proposal : consume requirements with nodepool -> https://review.openstack.org/#/q/topic:nodepool-global-req,n,z
**** presumably this was not done because nodepool operated outside the OpenStack ecosystem; however
**** nodepool is consuming projects that are based on global-requirements (dib)
**** nodepool is being packaged like everything else; version skew causes issues (particularly with zuul)
**** we have good testing with the dsvm test & functional tests

** RefStack Site Hosting
*** https://review.openstack.org/#/c/188207/ (hogepodge, davidlenwell)
* Priority Efforts
** Swift logs
*** I believe the trouble with the os-loganalyze updates was due to not reloading apache. https://review.openstack.org/#/c/199375/ should fix the problem, so https://review.openstack.org/#/q/status:open+project:openstack-infra/os-loganalyze+branch:master+topic:enable_swift,n,z are ready for review but should probably be baby-sat on the way in.
** Nodepool DIB
** Migration to Zanata
** Downstream Puppet
*** (asselin available 2nd half of meeting)
*** Common-ci Zuul merged: http://lists.openstack.org/pipermail/openstack-dev/2015-July/068565.html
** Upgrading Gerrit
** Docs publishing
*** Holding pattern while Swift logs issues get ironed out
* Phabricator analysis, following https://review.openstack.org/#/c/194119/ (ttx)
* Storyboard Development
* Grafana.o.o (pabelanger)
** https://review.openstack.org/#/c/179208/
* The Ops Mid-Cycle [http://lists.openstack.org/pipermail/openstack-operators/2015-July/007634.html details are now available], Palo Alto, Aug 18-19 (pleia2)
** Since we'll be running an infra-cloud soon, it makes sense to send some infra people, so far the following people plan on attending: crinkle, greghaynes, pleia2
** Thoughts? Others interested/able?
* Open discussion

== Upcoming Project Renames ==
(any additions should mention original->new full names and link to the corresponding change in Gerrit)

== Database CI ==

Turbo-Hipster is continuous integration for OpenStack nova database migrations. For each new patchset for [[Nova]] the database migrations are ran against real user datasets and timed to catch performance issues that may cause significant maintenance times for operators.

Doing a large OpenStack deployment has always been hard when it came to database migrations. Running a migration requires downtime, and when you have giant datasets that downtime could be hours. To help catch these issues [http://josh.people.rcbops.com/2013/09/building-a-zuul-worker/ Turbo-Hipster] will now run your patchset’s migrations against copies of real databases. This will give you valuable feedback on the success of the patch, and how long it might take to migrate.

[[ThirdPartySystems/DB Datasets CI|3rd Party CI information at ThirdPartySystems/DB Datasets CI]]

=== What should I do if Turbo-Hipster fails? ===

That depends on why it has failed. Here are some scenarios and steps you can take for different errors:

FAILURE – Did not find the end of a migration after a start
If you look at the log you should find that a migration began but never finished. Hopefully there’ll be a traceroute for you to follow through to get some hints about why it failed.

WARNING – Migration %s took too long
In this case your migration took a long time to run against one of our test datasets. You should reconsider what operations your migration is performing and see if there are any optimisations you can make, or if each step is really necessary. If there is no way to speed up your migration you can email us at rcbau@rcbops.com for an exception.

FAILURE – Final schema version does not match expectation
Somewhere along the line the migrations stopped and did not reach the expected version. The datasets start at previous releases and have to upgrade all the way through. If you see this inspect the log for traceroutes or other hints about the failure.

FAILURE – Could not setup seed database. FAILURE – Could not find seed database.
These two are internal errors. If you see either of these, contact us at rcbau@rcbops.com to let us know so we can fix and rerun the tests for you.

FAILURE – Could not import required module.
This error probably shouldn’t happen as Jenkins should catch it in the unit tests before Turbo-Hipster launches. If you see this, please contact us at rcbau@rcbops.com and let us know.

If you receive an error that you think is a false positive, leave a comment on the review with the sole contents of "recheck migrations".

=== Escalation ===
If you see any continued false positives or have any questions or problems please contact us on [mailto:rcbau@rcbops.com rcbau@rcbops.com]
Joshua Heskethhttps://wiki.openstack.org/w/index.php?title=ThirdPartySystems/DB_Datasets_CI&diff=60463ThirdPartySystems/DB Datasets CI2014-08-14T03:03:52Z
Joshua Hesketh: Created page with "{{ThirdPartySystemInfo|name=DB Datasets CI |account=turbo-hipster |contact=rcbau@rcbops.com |intent=Continuous integration for OpenStack nova database migrations. |structure=D..."

== Database CI ==

=== What should I do if Turbo-Hipster fails? ===

=== Escalation ===
If you see any continued false positives or have any questions or problems please contact us on [mailto:rcbau@rcbops.com rcbau@rcbops.com]
Joshua Heskethhttps://wiki.openstack.org/w/index.php?title=ThirdPartySystems/TurboHipster&diff=56683ThirdPartySystems/TurboHipster2014-06-25T02:00:10Z
Joshua Hesketh:
